The Vowed Life
Vowed
life is our choosing of Jesus’ way of relating to persons, possessions and
power. Living this consecration of our lives deepens our relationship with
Jesus and frees us to help others recognize his presence in their lives.
Jesus said: “You shall love the Lord your God with your whole
heart, with your whole soul, and with all your mind.” This is the
greatest and first commandment.
The second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Matthew 22:37-39
Chastity
Our vow of chastity brings us into a special relationship with God,
others, and all of creation. We promise to love with an undivided heart
and to center all our affections in God. Our life of prayer and mutual
support in community sustains us in this consecration and enables us to
grow in love, respect and concern for all people.
Poverty
By our vow of poverty, we renounce the independent use and disposition of
material goods and commit ourselves to live as those who personally
possess nothing, communally sharing what we have and who we are. The
simplicity of our lives and our concern for the poor give witness to our
hope for a just world.
Obedience
Through our vow of obedience, we profess our desire
to be one with Jesus in seeking to know and to do God’s will. Obedience requires our active participation in decision making and our
response in faith to persons and groups who mediate God’s will in our
lives. We live these vows in community and strive for the spirit of union
which reflects the love of the Trinity.
“God’s people cry out from a fragmented world. The
social-political-economic system in which we live and minister is unjust.
To sustain such a system has profound consequences for all the people of
God. In a world which is becoming increasingly interdependent, the
redemptive love and action of Jesus moves us to compassionate, prophetic,
liberating action. In this world, redeemed and yet filled with so many
causes and signs of death, WE CHOOSE LIFE.”
